A daytrip to Warappa Creek is a journey back in time. The trip has the following highlights:
Bakkie (Plantation Reynsdorp)
Visit the Bakkie Museum. The museum has a large collection of old bottles, prints, maps, paintings and many old utensils.
Citrus Plantation, Alliance
A ride behind a tractor through the working plantation, visiting the old manager’s residence, sluice and staircase of the old hospital and passing by the contractors’ house. Followed by a warm lunch in authentic surroundings.
A wonderful 8.5 km trip through the recently re-opened Warappa creek and canal. It starts as a narrow creek winding its way through green tunnels of overhanging trees and continuously changing vegetation. The canal widens into a stunning and unique view. This area is home to many different bird species.
At the end of the channel we reach a beach at the Atlantic Ocean. Here we walk along Suriname’s ‘wild coast’.
Historical and industrial heritage
Along the creek we encounter a number of historical sites, such as a sugar factory with steam engines from 1830, a steam car, old sluices and gates, tombs and the original ‘ring dams’ of poisonous cacti, planted to prevent slaves from escaping.
Bird Watching Cabin
At the beach, a bird-watching cabin overlooks the ocean. Special bird watching excursions are organized under the guidance of an ornithologist.
